This "Vibe Coding" project is a continuation of my experimental series from last year, Ancient Method Programming: Reweaving Nǚ. Both works are rooted in the act of weaving, seeking to iterate and redefine the specific "oblique-dot" stroke (𡿨) within the Chinese character for "woman" (女).
Tracing the abstract stroke 𡿨 back to Shang Dynasty oracle bone and bronze inscriptions, two figurative origins emerge: one suggests the representation of a woman’s right breast when combined with other strokes; the other depicts a kneeling knee. Neither of these forms aligns with how I wish to define myself—or the act of "self-inscription"—through repetitive portrayal.
The exact reason why the character 女 was originally traced in such a posture remains historically debated, but theories generally fall into three categories: 1. Postures derived from ancient ritual etiquette; 2. A reflection of the social status of women in antiquity; 3. A derivation from the "men plow, women weave" labor culture (the posture of weaving while kneeling).
However, through my studies in textile courses, I discovered that no such "kneeling" posture existed in historical weaving practices. Last year, as a weaving enthusiast, I decided to use my own weaving postures to reshape and redefine the form of 女. I created an interactive installation featuring fabrics woven in various positions to showcase this redesigned, updated character.
In this second iteration, the project invites anyone behind the screen to participate. By using your own form—whether you are weaving or not—you are inscribing the character 女. Because you, in any form, are inherently defining what 女(Woman/Female) looks like.
I invite you to interact, capture your image, and redefine the character with your presence. You are also welcome to click the 📧 button(at Footer Section) below to send your captured image to my inbox. I hope to further evolve this work using these collective contributions in the future.
